Bundled services: Droplets App Platform Managed DB Spaces Kubernetes Functions
What it is
DigitalOcean is a developer-friendly cloud with multiple product surfaces: Droplets (VPS), App Platform (PaaS-style), Managed Databases, Spaces (S3-compatible), Kubernetes. Pricing is meaningfully kinder than AWS / GCP / Azure but more expensive than Hetzner. Polished documentation and DX have always been the differentiator.
Best for
- Indie developers and small teams that want VPS without AWS complexity
- App Platform for git-deploy PaaS without the Vercel premium
- Managed Postgres / Redis at predictable pricing
When not to pick it
Skip DigitalOcean for very large enterprise workloads where AWS depth matters. Skip for cost-leaders; Hetzner is meaningfully cheaper.
My take
DigitalOcean is the safe middle-ground cloud. Pricing is reasonable, DX is good, the catalogue is wide enough for most apps.
