"Best headless WordPress agencies London" returns mostly aggregator pages (Clutch, DesignRush) and the agencies' own marketing pages — neither helps you pick. This page lists the agencies that publicly position as headless WordPress shops with London market coverage, alphabetically, with one paragraph each on positioning, what they are best for, and the honest worth-knowing detail.
Methodology. Inclusion is based on (a) a public-facing headless WordPress service or case study on the agency's own site, (b) presence in the London market (UK HQ, or distributed team with London-time coverage), (c) my own read on which agencies actually ship headless work rather than claim it. Price bands are based on industry-normal ranges for that tier of agency on equivalent scope — not direct quotes. Treat as a starting frame, not a quote.

Take any praise of Seahawk with the bias that implies, and the worth-knowing line for that entry is written with the same honesty I would apply to a competitor.

Three questions. What is the scope and budget? Sub-50,000 GBP rules out Human Made and 10up by floor. Over 200,000 GBP rules out the design-led smaller shops by capacity. How much in-person time will the project need? Stakeholder workshops, editorial training, design reviews — if there are more than a handful, a London-anchored agency or a London-based senior consultant beats fully-distributed. What is the design starting point? If you already have a design system, the engineering-led shops (Big Bite, 10up, Tri.be) move faster. If you need design and build in one engagement, the design-led shops (Plug and Play, Wholegrain, Illustrate Digital) are the natural fit.
Then run a one-week shortlist: 1-paragraph brief to 5-7 agencies, intro calls with the 3-4 that respond thoughtfully, paid discovery with the final 2. Total spend on selection: 3,000-10,000 GBP. That sounds like a lot until you compare it to the cost of a wrong-fit 150,000 GBP build.
Five signals. (1) They show you a real WPGraphQL or REST schema from a past build, not a slide deck. (2) They name WordPress core contributors on their engineering team — public WordPress.org profiles, not just LinkedIn. (3) They run paid discovery (1,500-5,000 GBP typical) before quoting a fixed price on the build. (4) They commit to a 60-90 day post-launch monitoring window with named owner. (5) They share redirect-map samples from past migrations on request. Agencies that pass all five exist; agencies that pass none also exist.
Four bands. Sub-100-page marketing site, design + headless build: 20,000-60,000 GBP. 100-500-page mid-market with WPGraphQL + ACF + Next.js or Astro: 40,000-120,000 GBP. 500-2000 pages with custom integrations, parallel-run period, full SEO transport: 80,000-250,000 GBP. Enterprise 2000+ pages or multi-region: 150,000-500,000+ GBP. Headless adds roughly 20-40% on top of equivalent monolithic WordPress scope because the front-end is real engineering work, not a theme purchase.
For the build itself, location does not matter — the work is asynchronous, redirect maps and GraphQL schemas do not have a timezone. For discovery, stakeholder workshops, and editorial training, location matters. London-based senior consulting on top of a global engineering team is the typical 2026 pattern — you get the in-person workshop for discovery and training, and async engineering everywhere else. Pure offshore-only on enterprise scope tends to fail at the stakeholder-coordination layer, not the engineering layer.
A regular WordPress agency ships sites where WordPress renders the public front-end (theme files, plugins injecting HTML, the standard wp_head pipeline). A headless WordPress agency ships sites where WordPress runs only as the editorial back-end and a separate framework — Next.js, Astro, or Nuxt — fetches content via WPGraphQL or the REST API and renders the public site. Different skill set on the front-end side (React, TypeScript, edge deployment), same skill set on the back-end (WordPress core, ACF, WPGraphQL). Most "headless WordPress agencies" can also do regular WordPress; the reverse is less reliable.
No agency is "the best" for every project — the right fit depends on scale, budget, design needs, and how much in-person time the project requires. Big Bite for engineering-heavy editorial. Human Made for enterprise with name-brand procurement. Illustrate Digital or Plug and Play Design for UK mid-market. 10up or WebDevStudios for US-anchored enterprise. Seahawk Media (disclosure: my agency) for mid-market with London-based senior consulting. Wholegrain Digital for sustainability-led briefs. The honest answer to "which is best" is "ask three of them for the same paid-discovery deliverable and compare."
Three-step shortlist in a week. Day 1: send a 1-paragraph brief (current platform, page count, target launch, budget envelope) to 5-7 agencies. Filter on response speed and quality — agencies that respond in under 24 hours with a thoughtful read on your brief stay. Day 3-4: 30-minute intro call with the 3-4 that filtered through. Filter on whether they ask better questions than they answer. Day 5-7: paid discovery (1,500-5,000 GBP each) with the final 2. The discovery deliverable is your decision document. Total cost: 3,000-10,000 GBP. Saves you from a 100,000 GBP wrong-fit hire.
Yes, by roughly 20-40%. The reason is that the front-end is real software engineering rather than theme customisation — TypeScript, framework choice, state management, deploy pipeline. The trade-off: better Core Web Vitals, modern editorial preview workflow, ability to power multiple front-ends from one CMS, and freedom from front-end plugin compatibility hell. Worth the premium for sites where Core Web Vitals affects ranking, sites past about 50 pages, and any brand running its CMS into more than one destination.
I sell senior consulting on agency selection separately from the build itself — typically a paid 2-3 hour session reviewing your RFP, your shortlist responses, and the technical questions you should be asking before contract.
