What it is
Amplitude is Mixpanel's primary competitor in product analytics. Same fundamental shape — events, funnels, retention, cohorts — with a stronger enterprise sales motion and slightly different dashboard ergonomics. Generous free tier (1M events/month). Acquired Iteratively in 2021 for tracking-plan governance. Public company, well-funded.
Best for
- Enterprise teams that need SOC 2, SSO, and full enterprise compliance out of the box
- Teams who tested Mixpanel and Amplitude side-by-side and preferred Amplitude's dashboard
- Companies with tracking-plan governance needs (Iteratively integration)
When not to pick it
Skip Amplitude if you are a small / cost-sensitive team — PostHog's free tier is more generous. Skip if you specifically prefer the Mixpanel dashboard.
My take
Amplitude vs Mixpanel is largely a dashboard preference question for non-enterprise. For enterprise, Amplitude has the better sales motion. PostHog is the cost-effective alternative to both.
