Microsoft Entra ID

Microsoft's identity platform (formerly Azure AD). Enterprise default for Microsoft-shop B2B.

Key takeaway: Correct when your organisation runs on Microsoft 365 and Azure, or when you sell to companies that do. Inside that world it is the default and everything else is friction. Outside it, the operational model assumes knowledge your team probably does not have, which makes this an organisational decision more than a technical one.

What it is

Microsoft Entra ID (renamed from Azure AD in 2023) is Microsoft's enterprise identity platform. SSO, conditional access, MFA, B2C and B2B variants. The default for organisations that have already chosen Microsoft 365 / Azure as their core stack.

Best for

  • Microsoft-shop enterprises with existing Azure / M365 procurement
  • B2B apps selling to organisations standardised on Entra ID

When not to pick it

Skip Entra ID outside the Microsoft world. Setup and operational model assume Microsoft-stack familiarity.

My take

Right tool for Microsoft-aligned organisations. Outside that world, the alignment cost outweighs the benefit.

Workforce identity first, customer identity second

Entra ID's centre of gravity is employees. Conditional access policies, device compliance, privileged identity management and group-based access to thousands of SaaS applications are the product, and they are excellent at that job. Customer-facing identity is a separate concern with its own configuration surface and its own learning curve, and teams often arrive expecting one coherent product and find two related ones. If your requirement is letting your own staff sign in to internal tools with the accounts they already have, Entra ID is not just adequate, it is the shortest path there is. If your requirement is a consumer sign-up funnel with social logins and a nice profile page, you are using an enterprise directory to do a job that Clerk or Supabase Auth does better, faster, and with a fraction of the configuration.

Selling into Microsoft shops

The other reason Entra ID appears in a stack is the customer side. Enterprises standardised on it expect your application to appear in their app gallery, honour their conditional access rules, and provision users through their directory. You can meet that expectation without adopting Entra ID yourself, which is exactly what WorkOS or Auth0 are for. They speak SAML and OIDC to Entra ID on your behalf and spare you learning its administration model. Adopt Entra ID as your own identity platform when your company already lives in Azure and Microsoft 365, so the licences, the support contract and the internal expertise are already present and paid for. Adopt a broker instead when Entra ID is something your customers have and you do not.

Frequently asked questions

Is Entra ID the same as Azure AD?

Yes. Microsoft renamed Azure Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID in 2023. The service is the same lineage, and older documentation, SDK names and community answers still use the Azure AD name, which makes searching for fixes more confusing than it should be. Expect to read both names during any integration.

Do I need Entra ID to support customers who use it?

No. Your application only needs to speak SAML or OIDC, and a broker like WorkOS or Auth0 handles the connection to each customer's Entra ID tenant. Adopting Entra ID as your own identity platform only makes sense when your organisation already runs on Microsoft 365 and Azure, so the expertise and licences are already there.

Is Entra ID good for consumer apps?

Not really. Its strength is workforce identity: conditional access, device compliance and group-based application access. Customer identity is a separate configuration surface with a steep learning curve, and for a consumer sign-up funnel Clerk, Supabase Auth or Firebase Auth will get you further in a day than Entra ID does in a week.
