Identity alignment is the actual product
The strongest thing Azure sells is not a compute service, it is the fact that your users already exist inside it. An organisation running Microsoft 365 has Entra ID as its identity backbone, and Azure resources inherit that directory, its groups, its conditional access policies, and its audit trail without integration work. For enterprise IT, that removes an entire category of project from the roadmap. Add .NET tooling that assumes Azure, Visual Studio integration, and a support relationship that likely predates the cloud migration, and the alignment argument compounds. None of it is technically exclusive, and you can wire Entra ID into AWS perfectly well, but every such connection is a thing to build and maintain forever. If Microsoft already runs your identity, running your compute there too removes friction that competitors cannot price away.
Azure OpenAI and procurement-shaped decisions
A large share of recent Azure adoption is procurement rather than engineering. Azure OpenAI puts OpenAI models inside a Microsoft contract, with the data residency, compliance certifications, and enterprise agreement terms a legal team has already approved. For a regulated organisation that cannot sign directly with a model vendor, that path is the difference between shipping and not shipping. Judge it on that basis: the models are the draw, the contract is the reason it is Azure. The rest of the platform is competent and comparable to AWS on complexity and cost, with Azure Functions, Azure SQL, AKS, and Cosmos DB covering the usual ground without standing out. Outside the Microsoft world, none of this outweighs AWS's ecosystem or GCP's data tooling, and the alignment you pay for is alignment you do not have.

Is Azure better than AWS?
Not in general, and better is the wrong frame. Azure is better for organisations already running Microsoft 365, Entra ID, and .NET, because identity and procurement come pre-solved. AWS is better nearly everywhere else on breadth of services, ecosystem, and available expertise. The deciding factor is what your organisation already runs, not a feature comparison.
Why do enterprises pick Azure?
Usually because of an existing Microsoft relationship rather than a technical evaluation. Entra ID already holds the identities, the enterprise agreement already exists, .NET teams are already trained, and Azure OpenAI provides a procurement-approved route to OpenAI models. Those are organisational advantages and they are real ones, but they do not transfer to companies outside that ecosystem.
Is Azure OpenAI the same as OpenAI?
It is the same family of models delivered under Microsoft's contract, hosted in Azure regions with Azure identity, networking, and compliance terms attached. What differs is the commercial and governance wrapper, plus occasional lag in which model releases are available. Enterprises pick it for the contract and data residency, not for a technical advantage over going direct.
