What it is
Hygraph (rebranded from GraphCMS in 2022) is the GraphQL-first hosted CMS. Federated content model — pull from multiple sources into one GraphQL schema. Cleaner DX than Contentful, more developer-flavoured than Storyblok. Free tier is generous; paid tiers are competitive.
Best for
- GraphQL-first stacks where the CMS query layer matches the existing app
- Teams that want a cleaner DX than Contentful at lower cost
- Projects with content federated from multiple sources
When not to pick it
Skip Hygraph if your team is REST-first and not motivated to learn GraphQL. Also skip if you need visual editing — Sanity Studio and Storyblok are stronger there.
My take
Hygraph is the cleaner mid-market alternative to Contentful — same shape, smaller bill, better developer experience. If you are evaluating Contentful and have flexibility, look at Hygraph first.
