What it is
Contentful is the longest-established headless CMS at the enterprise tier. Strong on workflow, audit trails, multi-environment deployment, role-based permissions. Pricing is enterprise-flavoured — meaningful spend at any non-trivial scale. Reliable, battle-tested, but not the framework new projects pick when budget is the constraint.
Best for
- Large enterprises with editorial governance requirements
- Organisations with complex publishing workflows and approval chains
- Teams needing the procurement-friendly enterprise SaaS contract
When not to pick it
Skip Contentful if budget is a real constraint — it is the most expensive option in the category by a meaningful margin. Skip for small teams that do not need the enterprise governance features. New projects almost never pick it over Sanity, Storyblok, or Hygraph in 2026.
My take
Contentful is mature, reliable, and chosen mostly because procurement said yes. New projects with the freedom to choose almost never pick it.
