What it is

Sanity is the editorial-heavy CMS of choice for teams that care about structured content and custom schemas. Studio (the editing UI) is open source, the back-end is a hosted Content Lake. Real-time collaboration, Portable Text for rich content, GROQ as the query language. The strongest product in the category for content modelled deeper than fields-on-a-page.

Best for

  • Editorial-heavy projects with custom content schemas
  • Teams that want collaborative real-time editing without engineering it
  • Projects with rich text that needs custom blocks (Portable Text)
  • Multi-channel publishing where content fans out to web + app + email

When not to pick it

Skip Sanity for teams that want a flat WYSIWYG, or for projects so simple that the schema-modelling work is overhead. Also skip if your team is intimidated by GROQ — it is powerful but the learning curve is real.

My take

Sanity is the right pick when content modelling is genuinely the hard part of the job. For marketing sites with simple content, the cost of the schema work outweighs the benefit. For an editorial product that needs to scale across channels, Sanity is hard to beat.
