STATIC SITE HOSTING IN 2026
Vercel, Netlify, and Cloudflare Pages compared on pricing, DX, performance, and integration. Which one wins for which workload.
Vercel
First-party Next.js host. Smoothest DX in the market for Next.js App Router with full RSC and ISR. The deploy-preview workflow, the analytics, the integrations all feel polished. Cost lever: bandwidth and ISR invocations are real expenses at scale.
Best for: Next.js applications with stateful interactivity, projects where DX wins over cost, teams that ship fast and value predictable platform behaviour.
Pricing: Hobby is free, Pro starts at 20 USD/user/month, Enterprise scales fast. Budget for 2x the initial estimate at any scale where ISR is in heavy use.
Netlify
Excellent for Astro and static-rendered Next.js. Slightly less polished for Next.js App Router with full RSC than Vercel. Build minute pricing is the lever to watch; bandwidth is generally cheaper than Vercel at the equivalent tier.
Best for: Astro sites, static Next.js sites without heavy ISR, projects where build minutes are predictable and bandwidth is the dominant cost.
Pricing: Free tier covers indie projects, Pro starts at 19 USD/user/month, Business at 99 USD. This site (gautamkhorana.com) runs on Netlify.
Cloudflare Pages and Workers
Best price-performance in 2026. Materially cheaper than Vercel and Netlify at scale, the underlying Cloudflare network is unrivalled for global delivery. Free tier is genuinely production-grade for indie operators.
Trade-off: deployment model and Next.js integration is rougher than Vercel. Some Next.js features need workarounds. Astro deployment is smoother. Worth choosing for cost-sensitive projects with engineering capacity to handle the rough edges.
Pricing: free tier covers most indie use, Workers paid plans start at 5 USD/month. The cost ceiling is dramatically lower than Vercel at scale.
My default picks per workload
Greenfield Next.js application: Vercel. The DX justifies the cost.
Astro marketing site or content site: Netlify. The match is excellent.
Static site at scale where cost matters: Cloudflare Pages. The savings are material.
Any site where the team has zero engineering capacity for platform issues: Vercel. Pay for the polish.
Any site where engineering capacity is plentiful and cost discipline matters: Cloudflare Pages first, learn the rough edges, capture the savings.
